Malawian nationals seek help at their Consulate

JOHANNESBURG - Foreign nationals are urging their governments to repatriate them from South Africa.

The call grows as the unofficial 30 June deadline for undocumented migrants to leave approaches.

A group of Malawian nationals has gathered outside their consulate in Sandton, seeking assistance.

"I'm from Lenasia Extension 9 and we are also here because of xenophobia. So there are so many people here from Malawi. We have to deal because we don't have any transport from here, from Johannesburg to Malawi.

“That's why we are here. We are waiting for transport. That's all. When we arrived here, we were asking for the security man. And we asked him to say we are here because we are looking for help.

“But he said no, today it's the weekend, it's Saturday. We are working from Monday to Friday. So, for today, we don't have anything to say to you. So now we are stranded here. We are looking for help. So when we are here, we are talking to say that we are not safe because you see now the situation is not right in Joburg.

“Now we run away from our areas, different areas. We are here to look for help. And now also we are here, but we are not safe because you see that there is no police or any security person who can protect us at the moment when these people are starting their issues to maybe chase us."
