SOWETO - Maponya Mall in Soweto has been forced to shut its doors on Thursday following a brutal attack on an e-hailing driver.
Police say the attackers shot the driver before torching his car.
Another driver and a passerby sustained gunshot wounds.
The attack is suspected to be linked to ongoing tensions between e-hailing drivers and local taxi operators.
Angry community members gathered outside the mall, demanding answers.
Some community members could be seem sweeping off remnants of the attack on the ground, in front of the mall.
The driver’s family has visited the scene.
One relative, unable to hold back her tears, was comforted by members of the community,and many of whom eNCA spoke to, let out their anger and frustration.
Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla confirmed that Chris Hani Road, between Marula Street and Mokoena Street, was closed.
He urged residents to avoid the area and use alternative routes.
