MEC Maile reveals Gauteng councillors owe millions

JOHANNESBURG - Councillors in Gauteng owe R5.5 million to municipalities.

Metros of Johannesburg, Tshwane and Ekurhuleni account for the majority of debt in the province.

Finance MEC, Lebogang Maile says the outstanding amount relates to municipal rates, housing accounts, and service bills.

Maile was speaking during an update on the province's budget on Saturday.

"In total, councillors in various municipalities in Gauteng owe municipalities R5.5 million. They owe on their houses and own municipal bills."
