Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula resigns as Parliament Speaker

JOHANNESBURG - Nosiviwe Mapisa-Naqakula is no longer the Speaker of Parliament.

She has resigned as both the Speaker and a member of the National Assembly.

It comes after a failed court bid to interdict her arrest on allegations of bribery and corruption.

These stemmed from her time as the Defence Minister.

It's not the first controversy to be associated with her.

In 2016, Mapisa-Nqakula admitted to smuggling a Burundian citizen with a false passport using an official jet.

She defended it as an ‘act of benevolence for an abused child.’

In 2019, UDM leader Bantu Holomisa accused her of receiving money and gifts amounting to around R5 million from a SANDF contractor.

In 2020, she transported an ANC delegation on a SANDF plane to Zimbabwe, flouting lockdown regulations.
