JOHANNESBURG - A prisoner has been killed and Correctional Services officials wounded, during a confrontation at Oudtshoorn prison in the Western Cape.
The department says inmates had refused to be searched and instead attacked officials on Wednesday.
The situation was eventually stabilised and the operation completed.
Contraband items such as cellphones and narcotics have been confiscated.
Four officials sustained facial stab wounds.
Offenders involved in the stabbings have been placed in single cells pending disciplinary action.
