Patients evacuated as Tembisa Hospital's emergency unit up in flames

JOHANNESBURG - A fire that broke out at the Tembisa Tertiary Hospital has been contained.

The Ekurhuleni Emergency Services says no injuries have been reported.

The fire broke out on Saturday in the hospital's emergency unit.

The cause of the fire is not yet clear as investigations are underway.

Patients in the unit were evacuated.

Ekurhuleni Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza says that due to the proximity of the unit to the rest of the hospital, the main hospital traffic was not affected.

Despite the fire being contained, emergency service says that they are concerned for the surrounding informal settlement as smoke from the hospital continues to billow.
