Plans to make the national sex offenders register public stalled

JOHANNESBURG - The Justice and Constitutional Development Department's plans to make the National Sex Offenders Register public have stalled.

Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi cites confidentiality and disclosure provisions in the Sexual Offences and Related Matters Act as the reason for the delay.

The register was meant to be made public by the end of February but Kubayi says legislation will have to be reviewed to enable the reforms.

She has started a consultative process with several experts and institutions while working with the Office of the Information Regulator to ensure data privacy laws are complied with.

Kubayi says her ministry will make an announcement once the register is ready for release.
