Pollsmoor raid targets gang members

CAPE TOWN - Correctional Services officials seized a variety of contraband during a raid at Pollsmoor Prison.

The section targeted by the raid is home to members of Cape Town's gangs.

Correctional Services National Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, said they found cell phones, mandrax tablets, dagga, cell phone chargers, and sharp objects.

“We have just over an hour, having started the search. Pollsmoor will always be on our radar. It's one of the sections in a correctional facility or in a management area that we incarcerate most of the gang members and leaders who come from the Cape Town, you know, area in this province.

“So we always make sure that we get information about what is coming in, so we can either stop it from coming in, there's a lot that we stop from coming in. If it succeeds to come in because of security lapses and some of our members not doing their work, you know, the way they are supposed to do it or accordingly, we then have these targeted raids,” he said.
