Ramaphosa distances himself from Mashatile scandal

JOHANNESBURG - President Cyril Ramaphosa has distanced himself from his Deputy President Paul Mashatile's scandals.

Mashatile faces a R10 000 fine for failing to declare a diamond gifted to his wife by diamond dealer Louis Liebenberg.

Parliament’s ethics committee rejected his explanation that he was waiting for the stone to be valued.

But Ramaphosa says Mashatile must account for himself and answer the questions surrounding the gift.

"I can't answer for him, and he has answers for all these matters. We will need to wait for him to provide answers, to all these questions, and, only he can, answer them," he says.
