Ramaphosa to visit Eastern Cape as floods death toll rises to 78

JOHANNESBURG - Search and rescue efforts continue in parts of the Eastern Cape this Friday morning, following this week's devastating storms and floods.

President Cyril Ramaphosa is expected in the province this morning, touring the worst hit areas.

Nearly 80 deaths have been recorded, and the grim reality is that some schoolchildren are still missing.

They were among the 13 travelling in their scholar transport, when the driver attempted to cross a flooded bridge and were swept away.

Schools and homes have also been destroyed and infrastructure damaged.

Affected communities are now desperate for relief.

Government has classified the floods as a disaster, adding a further declaration could follow at a later stage.
