JOHANNESBURG - With grid constraints posing a major threat to energy security, Electricity and Energy Minister Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has announced four preferred bidders for the first phase of Independent Transmission Projects.

This is opening the door to private sector delivery of transmission infrastructure.
Energy analyst, Chris Yelland explained the announcements made on Monday mean that additional projects will be constructed and add energy generation to the grid.

Yelland said pre-qualified bidders have been selected for the projects.
Eskom's split into separate entities has also been given ministerial approval.
The power utility is planning to expand its electricity infrastructure by constructing 14,000 kilometres of new transmission line.
Professor Sampson Mamphweli, from the South African National Energy Development Institute said Eskom has the ability to deliver.
