CAPE TOWN - Langa community in Cape Town is up in arms. It accuses the municipality of relocating an informal settlement onto land that is being used as a primary school's sports grounds.
Residents initially thought the city was fulfilling a promise to upgrade the school's sports grounds when they saw municipal officials beginning work on Saturday.
The city's human settlements directorate claims that the relocation of 46 families is temporary.
The group has built structures under high voltage power lines, and the emergency decision is for their safety.
The human rights commission says the city has other pockets of land it could be using, and the families it is planning on moving are not the only ones who need to be relocated.
