Mthethwa, 58, had a long and distinguished career in government and the ANC.

He was appointed South Africa’s Ambassador to France in December 2023.

Before that, he served as Minister of Safety and Security from 2008 to 2009, and as police minister from 2009 until May 2014.

Described as a “distinguished servant of the nation,” Mthethwa’s career was marked by dedicated service in critical ministerial roles.

“I have no doubt that his passing is not only a national loss but is also felt within the international diplomatic community,” the department said.
