SA to benefit from US Supreme Court’s tariff ruling

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa stands to benefit from the latest US Supreme Court ruling on President Donald Trump's tariffs.

That is according to analysts who say that while the tariffs have been lowered some uncertainty remains.

The US Supreme Court has ruled that Donald Trump exceeded his authority when he imposed tariffs against other countries, South Africa included.

Six out of nine judges agreed that the law Trump used did not authorise a president to impose tariffs.

The tariffs have caused volatility and broken long-established trade deals.

Trump has imposed reciprocal and punitive tariffs on those countries he has issues with.

South African goods were hit with 30 percent tariffs, while most other African countries were hit with a 15 percent tariff.

However, sector-specific tariffs on imports of products such as steel and aluminium do not fall under the court's ruling and remain in place.
