SA braces for higher electricity costs

JOHANNESBURG - South Africans are bracing for higher electricity bills after Nersa approved another tariff increase.

Households and businesses are already grappling with rising living costs, raising concerns about affordability.

But energy analysts warn that without higher tariffs, Eskom may struggle to maintain the grid.

Hartmut Winkler, from the University of Johannesburg, explained the balancing act behind the decision.

“It will slightly increase the cost of everything. As much as the general public and almost everybody except for Eskom have been saying, please don't do this to us, Eskom has managed to convince the regulator that this is what is needed for them in order to meet their costs. And if one looks at what their costs really boil down to, we are almost out of lurching.”
