PRETORIA - National Police Commissioner Fannie Masemola says the SAPS is determined to fight against the spike in cash-in transit heists.

This follows the recent incident in Limpopo where 18 suspects were shot and killed by the police.

Masemola says CIT robberies are expected to increase as we head towards the festive season.

"We have seen a surge in CIT heists, especially in provinces like KwaZuluNatal, Eastern Cape, Gauteng, of late Mpumalanga and North West.

"Their numbers are rising. We've put our plans in place," he said.

"We understand these thugs are out there determined to get who's life they come across, hence we also make sure that when we go to them we use elite specialised units to handle them."
