SIMON'S TOWN - The South African Navy frigate SAS Amatola is finally home.
The vessel has docked in Simon's Town after almost five months at sea.
This followed a historic multi-country deployment across Africa and Asia.
The voyage was made even more significant as it was captained by Zanele Madiba, the first African woman to serve as Officer Commanding a South African Navy frigate.
Vice Admiral Monde Lobese said they were happy with the vessel's return.
"So here we are, bringing back now these sailors, the patriots, who went all the way for more than 96 days being at sea. It's not child's play.
"It shows the level of resilience, discipline, commitment and dedication in the fight against maritime crime and promoting the flag and the resilience of the South African people.
"So this ship and these 167 members flew this flag throughout these international waters, representing me and you with distinction, with zeal and diligence," he said.
The ship's return on Tuesday came just as planned.
"She left on the 25th of January. On the 2nd of May, she will be back alongside here in Simon's Town. And here they are. We are very excited that the families are also here," he said.
