SA’s water crisis | Cape Town exploring alternative water sources

CAPE TOWN - Water reuse and recycling will add around 7 percent to Cape Town’s total bulk water supply by 2040.

Authorities in the metro are hosting a two-day International Water Reuse Conference at the City Hall, where they're mapping out ways to help local leaders supplement their water supply.

Representatives from cities around the world are sharing ideas on how they’re also trying to get ahead of a water scarcity that’s predicted to worsen in the coming years.

WATCH: Cape Town spends billions to upgrade wastewater treatment

The aim is to add 300 million litres of water per day from new sources by 2030.

This will include desalinated seawater, groundwater extraction from two major aquifers as well as reusing wastewater.
