Serial rapist claims voices told him to commit crimes

JOHANNESBURG - A serial criminal who raped 90 women in Ekurhuleni, Gauteng between 2012 and 2021 claims a voice told him to commit the heinous crimes.

This emerged from a report by a clinical psychologist who took the stand in mitigation of sentence at the High Court sitting in Palm Ridge.

Last year Nkosinathi Phakathi pleaded guilty to 146 charges, including rape, compelled rape and kidnapping.

However, psychologist Dr Lynette Roux told the court that Phakathi may not have been aware of his actions while committing the crimes.

She says a prison sentence may not be the answer.

The state says it will now consult with its own expert to determine whether Phakathi should be sent for mental observation.

Sentencing procedures continue on Wednesday.
