Soweto school student's death heightens tensions

JOHANNESBURG - A tense situation is playing out in the at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) Soweto Campus in the South of Johannesburg.

Seventeen-year-old Cebo Biyela was stabbed to death on Monday following an altercation that allegedly involved students from the University of Johannesburg (UJ).  

This as two suspects appeared in court, in connection to the incident. 

It's also been confirmed that there is a third suspect in the matter.

Throughout the day school pupils marched in solidarity with Biyela's family.

The universities spokesperson Lebogang Seale confirmed that the incident occurred off campus, early this week and that the matter is under police investigation.  

"As a University, we convey our deepest condolences and sympathy to the deceased learner's family, relatives and the school community he was part of. 

"This is not the kind of news any parent expects, and our prayers are with the family and friends of the learner during this difficult time," he said. 

As tensions remain high Gauteng spokesperson Steve Mabona has called for calm.
