POLOKWANE - This International Workers' Day, Dr Phophi Ramathuba, is calling for swift action against employers who hire undocumented migrants.
The ANC Limpopo chairperson said employing undocumented migrants is a criminal offence and a breach of the country’s labour laws.
"I think we should appreciate that South Africa has progressive laws and policies. There are laws working with the Department of Employment and Labour.
"We have already been in discussion with both the Minister and the Deputy Minister about our inspectors because until such time you would find an employer being arrested for having employed an undocumented a someone who owns those markets," she said.
"You remember there were those sectors that have been declared by the law to say these are not the rescues, these are not your engineering sector, it's not your specialist in medicine, whatever, in finance."
Ramathuba said the law needs to be seen to be acting against employers who hire undocumented migrants.
"These are ordinary farm workers, these are ordinary general workers. So what needs to happen is to see the law acting on Phophi Ramathuba for having appointed such a person, and the charges must be on Phophi Ramathuba because if we close the tap, there won't be the influx of the undocumented. They are not appointing themselves; we are appointing them," she added.
