Teargas and rubber bullets fly, tyres burn amid Thembisa protest

THEMBISA - Thembisa residents vow to continue their fiery protest until the Ekurhuleni mayor comes to talk to them.

Electricity hikes are at the centre of the latest unhappiness, as residents decry the ever-increasing cost of living.

Angry and frustrated residents are seeing red over 13.4% power hike.

"The worst scenario is buying electricity worth R1000 then Ekhuruhleni will take their cut which is R200. When we ask the reason why? They claim its because of the repairs they have to do within the township.

"This has been happening since June. They are doing this on their own accord without speaking to us as residents," one resident lamented.

The protest began around 5am with roads being barricaded with burning tires.

Through the morning scenes escalated which saw teargas and rubber bullets being fired by SAPS to disperse the protesters.
