JOHANNESBURG - The Thembisa Hospital is fully operational after Saturday's fire, says Gauteng Health MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.
The hospital's accident and emergency unit caught fire in the late hours of Saturday afternoon.
No injuries were reported as all patients in the ward were evacuated or moved to other wards before the fire.
Although emergency patients will not be turned away, the accident and emergency unit remains closed until further notice.
Tembisa residents have been urged to use the surrounding clinics in the interim. Emergency services have also been warned to use alternative health facilities for emergencies.
According to the MEC, a total of 81 people were recorded in the unit at the time of the fire.
Of these, two were sent to the ICU, one 1 was sent to high care, and four were discharged.'
A total of 17 others were transferred to Charlotte Maxeke, Edenvale, Steve Biko and Tshwane District hospitals. A total of 50 patients were admitted to the hospital's antenatal unit, meanwhile, seven walked out of the hospital when they saw the fire.
Nkomo-Ralehoko says that the unit had just recently been renovated and met all health and safety standards.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
