JOHANNESBURG - There have been fewer crashes and fatalities on the roads during Easter, compared to the last three years.
Transport Minister, Barbara Creecy, has delivered an encouraging road safety report, after a busy travel period.
She says crashes were reduced from 209 in 2024 to 141 this year, a 32.5% reduction.
All provinces decreased in crashes, except the EC and Mpumalanga, which recorded small increases, she added.
"Fatalities reduced from 307 over Easter 2024 to 167 in 2025, a 45% decrease," the minister said.

As she hailed the decrease the Minister also noted with concern the safety of pedestrians on the roads.
This is almost half of the Easter weekend road fatalities were pedestrians.
In light of this, Creecy said they would conduct more public education to remind both pedestrians and drivers to practice road safety.
