JOHANNESBURG - The United National Transport Union (UNTU) said it has turned to the Labour Court to try and prevent what unions are calling a jobs bloodbath at the Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa.
State-owned PRASA plans to retrench more than 600 employees within the Mainline Passenger Services Division
UNTU said the consultation process was not transparent, and labour unions were not given the information they needed by PRASA.
It said taking legal action is now the best option it has in defence of the livelihood of its members.

Talks between PRASA's Group CEO Hishaam Emeran, UNTU, and the South African Trade and Allied Workers Union were scheduled to take place on Friday.
But PRASA cancelled the meeting.
UNTU said this is due to the fact that the matter is now before the courts.
The matter has been set down for a hearing in the Labour Court next Friday.
