UPDATE | Suspects arrested for multi-million rand cable theft rises to 8

DURBAN - KwaZulu-Natal police have arrested three more suspects for the theft of large quantities of copper cable worth millions, bringing the total to eight.  

It is believed some of the stolen cables belong to the municipality and Telkom.

The gang was allegedly loading the stolen items into two trucks at a storage facility in Illovo, KZN South Coast, to be transported out of the city.

The value of the stolen cables is estimated at around R2 million.

A tip-off was received by police and ET Rapid Response - which is part of the SAPS/BAC E2 project - and the group was intercepted at the site.

The nationality of the foreign men is still being verified, and, in the absence of documentation, it’s believed they could be Egyptian.

First responders initially believed they were Pakistanis.
