JOHANNESBURG - ANC President Cyril Ramaphosa has dismissed claims that he could resign following his party’s bruising performance in the 2026 Local Government Elections.
Ramaphosa has questioned the source of the rumours.
“I do not know where these rumours are coming from; I mean, whoever came up with a rumour like that is preposterous,” he said.
Ramaphosa was speaking on the sidelines of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) announcement of the final results on Sunday evening.
The ANC has lost its lead in five metros.

The former liberation movement has lost its majority in Buffalo City and holds a hair’s breadth lead over the DA in Mangaung.
Asked how painful the election outcome was for him, Ramaphosa maintained that the party had accepted the verdict.
“Concerning it might be, we accept that this is how the people of South Africa in our towns, our cities, in our metros have spoken. And this is their verdict. And we accept it with humility."
