JOHANNESBURG - The late anti-apartheid struggle stalwart and former Cabinet Minister, Pravin Gordhan, cut a prominent and formidable figure in government and politics.
However, those who knew him outside that world describe a man of principle and honour.
eNCA's Faith Daniels spoke to his friend, businessman and economist, Colin Coleman when Gordhan was still in hospital.
The anti-apartheid activist and Former Public Enterprises Minister has died in hospital at the age of 75.
Gordhan was admitted to hospital earlier this week.
He served as Minister of Finance, Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs and Public Enterprises and also served as SARS commissioner for 10 years.
He retired from government after the 29 May elections.
According to a family statement, Gordhan passed away peacefully in the hospital surrounded by his family and closest friends.
"After his retirement, Minister Gordhan fought a short, courageous battle with cancer," the statement read.
He is survived by his wife Vanitha and his daughters Anisha and Priyesha.
