WATCH | Tear gas, rubber bullets fly at Coronationville water protest

CORONATIONVILLE – Burning tyres and clouds of tear gas filled the streets of Coronationville in Johannesburg on Wednesday morning.

Residents had taken to the streets over water shortages they say have been ongoing for nearly eight years.

Several people were struck by rubber bullets as police tried to disperse the crowd.

Residents insist their protest was peaceful and they were in the streets to demand a basic right – water.

“We are trying to do a food business but we can’t. We cannot live without water. All we are asking for is water,” said one resident.

Despite Joburg Water’s assurances this week that supply would be restored within 10 hours, taps soon ran dry again.

The residents vow to continue demonstrating until the issue is resolved.
