'We have a big investigation' - Public Protector on immigration crisis

JOHANNESBURG - Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka said her office is running a wide-ranging systemic investigation into immigration.

Demonstrations over undocumented migration are continuing in parts of the country.

Gcaleka said the probe focuses on the root causes of the issue and links it to broader governance problems.

"We have got a big investigation into that. It's a systemic investigation. We are looking at the root causes of migration because it is a systemic issue in our country, and it needs to be confronted head-on.

"We have actually even discussed this with our colleagues in the diaspora because each and every one of us in the African continent has got to stand up, and particularly institutions such as ours.

"We've got the food poisoning matter, which is also impacted by illegal migration by the way, and we are hoping we'll be able to release something in the next few months around that, and we obviously have a couple of corruption-related cases which we are also hoping to release in the next six months."
