Transnet gets R40 billion support package to solve its problems

JOHANNESBURG - National Treasury will be providing a 47-billion rand support package to crisis-hit company Transnet .

It's been forced to make this emergency move as Transnet’s woes worsen with massive port backlogs. Last month Finance Minister Enoch Godogwana refused to give Transnet a bailout in his medium-term budget.

Is the funding a good step in the right direction?

Road Freight Association's Gavin Kelly hopes that the state owned rail company will look into repairing its infrastructure so that trains can start moving.

He says the returning of trains would ease the number of trucks on the road and eliminate congestion.
