Children's Safety Walk to raise awareness on child abuse

JOHANNESBURG - Children are leading the conversation about their own safety as they take to the streets of Johannesburg on Sunday.

The Children's Safety Walk aims to raise awareness about child abuse, violence and statutory rape.

The future leaders walked from Pieter Roos Park to the Constitutional Court to share their concerns directly with Chief Justice Mandisa Maya.

eNCA's Nabeelah Shaikh spoke to Gauteng social development MEC Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko.

"You can see that our country, when it comes to GBV, it's very serious. It's leading, in fact. And it's not correct that we are leading on those wrong things."

She also called on families of communities to work with government.

"On the 15th of May, we were celebrating International Family Day, because if we start with the families, with the communities, all these things will change... Government can't work alone. Families must take responsibility - work with us."

South Africa is observing Child Protection Week from 29 May to 5 June to raise awareness of the rights of children.
