JOHANNESBURG - Biovac and the SA Medical Research Council have launched clinical trials for a new oral Cholera vaccine.
This is the first time in decades that a vaccine will be developed end-to-end in South Africa.
It comes at a time when Africa faces growing cholera outbreaks and global vaccine shortages.
The project strengthens the continent's push to produce more of its own vaccines and advances the African Union’s 2030 target for 60 percent local manufacturing.
Backed by major global health funders, the vaccine has entered Phase 1 trials.
If successful, it could be available in Africa as early as 2028.
Biovac CEO, Dr Morena Makhoana, has more on this.
