City of Johannesburg pulls the plug on government debt

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg is taking on government entities.

It's cutting off water and power to state buildings over unpaid bills.

From health to justice, departments are feeling the pressure as the city moves to recover billions.

A Department of Health building in the CBD has already been cut off.

The Department alone owes around R200-million.

The City says all those who owe will be cut off - with hospitals being the only exception.

Other departments in arrears include Home Affairs, Correctional Services, Social Development, Public Works and the SANDF.

The City of Johannesburg is sending out a strong message that no one is exempt from paying for services.

With government entities owing around R1.4 billion, officials warn that more disconnections are imminent until these accounts are settled.
