Discussion | 987 Mothers died giving birth in 2023

CAPE TOWN - In 2023, nearly 1,000 mothers died during childbirth in South Africa.

The most common causes were non-pregnancy-related infections and other medical and surgical conditions.

Experts warn that the situation could deteriorate further, as increasing numbers of women avoid seeking medical care during pregnancy.

Professor Susan Fawcus, a leading researcher in maternal health from the University of Cape Town’s Obstetrics and Gynaecology unit, has dedicated her career to addressing maternal mortality.

She believes South Africa is unlikely to meet the Sustainable Development Goal of reducing maternal deaths by 2030.

Fawcus points to a shortage of skilled healthcare professionals, especially in under-resourced areas, as a key barrier.

While infections remain a major factor, she views limited access to care and resources as one of the most pressing challenges.

Without targeted investment in these areas, she warns, maternal health outcomes are unlikely to improve.
