Discussion | 'Adopt-a-Municipality' programme begins

DURBAN - The Public Works and infrastructure Ministry has entered into agreements with three municipalities - Metsimaholo in the Free State, uMngeni in KwaZulu-Natal, and Govan Mbeki in Mpumalanga.

This marks the launch of the pilot phase of the 'Adopt-a-Municipality' programme.

The  initiative was adopted by the Presidential Infrastructure Coordinating Council in November last year.

It aims to tackle longstanding challenges in municipal infrastructure delivery.

Velenkosini Hlabisa, Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, says they perform an oversight function to guarantee that any department that adopts a municipality as a public works project completes the work to the required standards.
