CAPE TOWN - As Police Minister Senzo Mchunu prepares to release the fourth quarter crime stats, the Cape Crime Crisis Coalition is sounding the alarm on gang violence.

The scourge has escalated beyond crime; it’s become a form of warfare. In the Western Cape alone, 263 gang-related murders were recorded in just one quarter.

The Coalition says enough is enough. It's demanding an independent, transparent and long overdue National Commission of Inquiry.

Dr Llewellyn MacMaster from the Coalition says it is disturbing because gangs have changed and are no longer just street gangs. It is organised crime.
