Discussion | Experts debunk paracetamol-autism claims

JOHANNESBURG - There is no proven link between autism and paracetamol, known as Acetaminophen in the US.

That's according to leading South African medical bodies.

It comes after President Donald Trump warned it can cause autism in unborn children.

He based this on a study that found possible links, but no causal relationship.

But medical bodies have reviewed the facts and concluded there is no reliable evidence.
They are now warning against the risks of not treating pain or fever during pregnancy.

Experts say that for any medication, a risk-benefit analysis must be done.

We discuss this with Professor Ismail Bhorat from the SA Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists.
