Khumalo was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport on Monday and faces charges of corruption along with other related offences.
His arrest comes just weeks after the Crime Intelligence Chief Financial Officer, Philani Lushaba, was also taken into custody.
Commenting on the case, crime expert Willem Els from the Institute for Security Studies said leadership must be held to a higher standard.
“If you are in a management position like that, you have to provide leadership to your team. Fortunately, this case was uncovered at a very early stage,” said Els.
