PRETORIA - A veterinary team from the University of Pretoria’s Faculty of Veterinary Science has performed a ground-breaking, life-saving surgery on a four-year-old white rhino bull named Houdini.

Houdini survived a brutal poaching attack after being shot through the nose.

While he overcame the initial trauma, he was later faced with a life-threatening complication an obstruction in his nasal passage that left him struggling to breathe.

Dr Elza Hollenbach, Specialist Equine Surgeon at the University of Pretoria, says the fortunate aspect of this case was that they were able to keep the rhino under anaesthesia and recover him safely.
