JOHANNESBURG - Lawyers caught using artificial intelligence in legal filings find themselves in hot water.

This comes after the Johannesburg High Court referred a team of lawyers to the Legal Practice Council for using non-existent case citations in their heads of argument.

Gauteng LPC's director, Ignatius Briel, said artificial intelligence should be used responsibly.

"There's the risk that the court might actually be misled," he said.
