Discussion | SANDF budget cuts a cause for concern

JOHANNESBURG - South Africa's military readiness is under sharp public focus following not just a humiliating operational withdrawal from the DRC, but also explosive claims from the Navy that the National Treasury is ‘sabotaging’ the SANDF. 

Treasury has since fired back, saying it's not the villain here, and that funding decisions reflect tough national trade-offs, not political targeting. 

So, who is responsible for the SANDF's decline, and what does this moment tell us about South Africa’s security posture in an era of deep fiscal constraint?
