CAPE TOWN - WhatsApp and Instagram channels that published sexual content involving South African children have been shut down.

A court has also ordered Meta the parent company of both platforms to identify the individuals responsible for creating and operating these accounts.

With the rapid expansion of digital technologies, online child exploitation and abuse have increased dramatically.

Deputy Minister of Communications and Digital Technologies, Mondli Gungubele, says authorities are actively monitoring the situation.

“The court has instructed Meta, as the holding company, to ensure that this information is removed,” he said.
