CAPE TOWN - UCT is proposing the establishment of a proton therapy centre to boost cancer treatment.
Currently, all of the 135 centres operating globally are located in the northern hemisphere.
The centre will be the first in Africa, and 1 of only 3 in the southern hemisphere, with the others in Argentina and Australia.
Professor Andy Buffler From UCT's Applied Sciences Research Unit and Professor Jeannette Parkes, the head of Clinical and Radiation Oncology at Groote Schuur Hospital, discuss this further.
