LISBON - The Western Cape government has stepped in to assist a group of young soccer players and coaches who were left stranded in Europe.

The Cape Town-based team had travelled to Spain to compete in a tournament, but financial challenges meant they couldn’t afford to return home.

As public concern grew, Western Cape Sport MEC Ricardo Mackenzie travelled to Lisbon to help coordinate the group’s return to South Africa.
