GEMS increase faces pushback

JOHANNESBURG - The Government Employees Medical Scheme continues to defend its price increase for 2026.

Public sector workers will have to fork out nearly 10 percent more for medical cover next year.

GEMS, as it's known, is the largest restricted medical scheme in the country with over 890,000 members and nearly two and a half million beneficiaries.

It says that despite the increase, GEMS contributions will continue to be among the most affordable in the sector.
