Google sets aside R688M for local media

JOHANNESBURG - South African media houses are about to get a major financial boost.

Google has set aside over R600 million to assist the country's media.

This comes after a two year investigation by the Competition Commission, into the role of digital companies like Google, Meta and Microsoft in the news market.

The deal also includes support for newsroom innovation, training and grants for local and community media.

Kate Skinner from the Association of Independent Publishers says there is a compliant structure in place for the distribution of funds to media houses.

"People should be confident around the distribution of the funds, the compliance mechanisms in place, it's very transparent and very clear."
