SOWETO - President Cyril Ramaphosa is delivering the memorial lecture on the life and times of Elijah Barayi.

The trade unionist was one of the founders of the National Union Mineworkers.

He went on to become the first president of COSATU.

Barayi was also involved in the Mass Democratic Movement which fought against the apartheid regime.

He died in 1994, just months before the first democratic elections.
