M23 rebels advance as DRC conflict dominates AU

JOHANNESBURG - The war in the Democratic Republic of Congo is front and center at this weekend's African Union summit, but diplomatic progress seems unlikely as M23 rebels advance.

The rebels’ push toward Bukavu has raised fears of a broader conflict in the Great Lakes region, echoing past devastating wars.

Rwanda, accused of supporting the M23 group, remains defiant, with President Paul Kagame insisting his country will defend itself against what he calls "existential threats."

International calls for Rwanda to halt support have been met with resistance, and tensions are rising.
