Ngcuka denies any political interference in TRC cases

JOHANNESBURG - Former National Director of Public Prosecutions Bulelani Ngcuka has denied political interference in the prosecution of TRC cases during his tenure.

Ngcuka was testifying about delays in prosecutions during his time in office between 1998 and 2004.

Further in his testimony, Ngcuka said the  National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) knew apartheid police were behind Steve Biko's murder but there wasn't enough evidence to prosecute the case.

Biko died in 1977. The NPA has reopened an inquest into his death.

The Khampepe Commission has ruled that cross-examination of  Ngcuka will be postponed to a later date.

Ngcuka’s lawyer Rafik Bhana SC argued the Calata family and others lacked grounds to cross-examine him.

The commission, however, continues hearing Ngcuka's evidence-in-chief.
